Can glycemic control minimize the risk of diabetic nephropathy?

In this video, Dr. Suman Kirti, Endocrinologist, Holy Family Hospital, New Delhi talks about whether glycemic control can minimize the risk of diabetic nephropathy. Dr. Suman confirms that glycemic control can minimize the risk of diabetic nephropathy. The DCCT trial which is the largest trial for type 1 diabetes and UKPDS trial for type 2 diabetes have shown significant reductions of nephropathy by 33 % with decrease in HbA1c levels too. Reduction of HbA1c by 0.9 % can decrease nephropathy by 30%. Reduction of HbA1c levels by 2 % can cause 60% reduction of developing nephropathy. Hence, there is a huge advantage of glycemic control on diabetic nephropathy.
