How do we do the LDL cholesterol test?
In this video, Dr. Sunil Dargar, MBBS, MD, Pathologist, New Delhi, will discuss how to do LDL cholesterol test. New guidelines from American Heart Association talks about the relevance of cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, HDL and other components in patient with cardiac risks and coronary vessel disease. Cholesterol is a steroid molecule which is required for mostly all essential functions and synthesis of steroids in the body. Low density lipoprotein (LDL) is a substance which leads to erosion of the inner surface of the blood vessels and can lead to plaque formation. Earlier to test LDL and other cholesterol components, an 8 hour fasting blood sample was required. But the new guidelines have stated that it is not required for a fasting blood sample. Dr. Dargar, hence will highlight the importance of the LDL test.
