High Prevalence of Excessive Screen Time among Young Children in India

A recent study from Akola district, India, highlights the growing concern of excessive screen exposure among children aged 6 months to 6 years. Among 417 children surveyed in outpatient clinics, 53.7% exceeded recommended screen time limits, with an average of 1.6 hours per day. Alarmingly, infants under 1 year had the highest exposure rate at 95.1%.

The study identified several significant predictors of excessive screen time, including maternal and paternal education levels, maternal occupation, and child behavioral factors such as tantrums.

These findings underscore the urgent need for public health interventions aimed at reducing screen exposure in early childhood. Strategies should focus on parental awareness, promoting outdoor activities, and establishing healthy screen-time habits. Healthcare providers—including general physicians, pediatricians, and child health specialists—should actively counsel families during clinical visits and advocate for targeted community and school-based programs.

Further research is needed to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on screen-time habits and to assess the effectiveness of interventions in reducing exposure among young children.
