Understanding Food Selectivity in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Understanding food selectivity (FS) in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is crucial for both caregivers and healthcare professionals. A recent research illustrates the clinical correlates and prevalence of FS among children with ASD.

Food selectivity, or "picky eating," is a common concern among parents of young children. However, it appears to be more prevalent and pronounced in children with developmental disabilities, particularly those with ASD.

A recent study examining FS in children with ASD utilized various measures to calculate mealtime behavior and disruptive tendencies. The findings revealed that a substantial proportion of children with ASD, approximately 45.6%, exhibited FS behaviors. These behaviors were strongly associated with the severity of disruptive mealtime behaviors and hyperactivity/noncompliance, as assessed by standardized measures.

This study also found a lack of association between FS and anthropometric measurements or nutritional intake, which hints that FS in children with ASD is not merely a matter of dietary preferences but rather closely linked with behavioral aspects of the disorder. Hence, expanding the range of foods offered alone may not be sufficient if underlying behavioral challenges are not addressed concurrently. Instead, interventions should adopt a holistic approach, considering both dietary preferences and behavioral patterns.
