Treatment of Ahiputana (Diaper Rash) in Infants Using Shatdhauta Ghruta

Ayurveda is an age-old medical system that addresses human swasthya, or natural health, as well as a broad range of illnesses and how to treat them. In paediatric OPD, nappy rash is a prevalent issue. In the first year of life, the prevalence of nappy rash has been found to range from 7 to 35%. The majority of occurrences happen in children between 9 to 12 months. Inadequate care of newborns and kids who need nappy changes is the root cause. Stanyadushthi is the primary Hetu (Cause) of Ahiputana, according to Ayurveda. Pidika (Papulovesicular lesion), Kandu (Irritability owing to itching), Strava (Discharge), Varna (Skin colour over perianal region), and other characteristics define the condition. A 10-month-old male patient presented with complaints of loose stools, irritability, redness in the perianal region accompanied by rashes, and itching, which worsened during episodes of frequent loose stools.

The patient was healthy until five days ago when he began experiencing episodes of loose stools, occurring 6 to 7 times a day for the past two days. Subsequently, he developed rashes with redness and itching in the anal region. He has had recurrent episodes of loose stools, along with associated symptoms of irritability and excessive crying. The treatment included Shatdhauta ghruta will be applied as a viscous layer to the perianalregion 4 to 5 times a day, and the use of diapers will be avoided until the rashes heal.In Ayurvedic medicine, ghee is essential as both a carrier for active ingredients and a base for formulating various dosage forms. Ayurveda promotes the use of ghee in conjunction with other treatments, such as Brahmi ghrita for cognitive enhancement, Vasa ghrita for respiratory health, Shatadhauta ghrita for skin conditions, and Bhallatakadi ghrita for wound healing.

Shatadhauta ghrita is prepared by washing cow ghee 100 times with water, as indicated by traditional texts. This preparation is recommended for treating burns, chickenpox, scars, wounds, herpes, leprosy, and other skin ailments, and serves as a vehicle for topical medications.

Thus, the present study concluded that the application of Shatdhauta Ghruta is an effective and unique Ayurvedic remedy for treating diaper rash in infants. Source: Pawar PS, Gawai VU.
