Study Provides Insights into the Possible Impact of Male HPV Infection on Infertility

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a prevalent sexually transmitted infection globally, affecting nearly one-third of men and about one in five harboring high-risk strains associated with certain cancers. A recent study published in Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, highlighted the potential impact of high-risk HPV on male reproductive health, linking it to increased sperm necrosis, oxidative stress, and a suppressed immune response in semen.

The research, led by Dr. Carolina Olivera from Argentina, examined 205 men who underwent semen analysis at a urology clinic. Results showed that 19% tested positive for HPV, with a significant portion (74%) carrying high-risk genotypes, notably HPV-16. The same type of genotype is known to increase the risk of cervical and vaginal cancer in women and oropharyngeal and penile cancer in men. While traditional sperm parameters like concentration and motility showed no significant differences among groups, high-risk HPV was associated with higher sperm necrosis, increased reactive oxygen species, and lower immune response markers, suggesting potential implications for fertility.

The study emphasized the need for further research into how HPV affects male fertility, specifically in relation to DNA damage and the immune system's role in the persistence of the virus. It warrants the need for more rigorous HPV screening in fertility contexts and promotes greater awareness of HPV vaccination for men, as the virus is often perceived primarily as a women's health issue.
