Global obesity trends are evolving differently across countries, age groups, and populations, reflecting diverse patterns of disease progression.
Obesity remains one of the most significant public health challenges worldwide, contributing to an increased risk of cardiovascular, renal, hepatic, respiratory, musculoskeletal, neuropsychiatric, metabolic, reproductive, and several malignant diseases. While it is often described as a global epidemic, recent evidence suggests that its progression is far more complex than previously recognized.
A comprehensive global analysis of 4,050 population-based studies involving 232 million individuals from 200 countries examined obesity trends between 1980 and 2024 using "obesity velocity," defined as the annual change in obesity prevalence. The findings revealed substantial variation across countries and age groups. In many high-income countries, particularly in Western Europe, obesity rates among children and adolescents began to plateau or slow by the early 2000s, followed later by similar trends among adults.
Conversely, obesity continues to rise steadily or accelerate across many low- and middle-income countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Pacific.
Importantly, the study demonstrates that countries with similar levels of economic development can exhibit markedly different obesity trajectories, underscoring the influence of social, cultural, environmental, and health system factors. These observations highlight that obesity is not a uniform global phenomenon but one shaped by diverse local determinants. Understanding these evolving patterns can help inform more targeted public health strategies and context-specific interventions aimed at preventing obesity and improving population health.
