Lipid and Natural Moisturizing Factor–Based Moisturizer for Clinically Sensitive Skin

A newly developed topical cream moisturizer formulated with natural moisturizing factors and lipids has demonstrated significant biological and clinical benefits in strengthening the skin barrier and improving tolerability in patients with clinically sensitive skin. The product was evaluated as adjunctive care in individuals with atopic dermatitis (AD), rosacea, and cosmetic intolerance syndrome (CIS).

Study Overview

Preclinical and clinical investigations assessed the moisturizer’s impact on key epidermal components, including structural proteins, lipids, gene expression, and clinical markers of barrier function. Outcomes also included skin hydration, texture, tolerability, and patient-reported quality of life (QoL).

Key Findings

  • Preclinical outcomes: Compared with untreated controls, the moisturizer significantly increased filaggrin levels by 77%, hyaluronic acid by 157%, and epidermal lipids by 30% (P<0.05). It also upregulated genes involved in critical epidermal lipid pathways essential for barrier integrity.
  • Clinical outcomes: Regular application led to progressive improvements in skin surface hydration and a reduction in transepidermal water loss over four weeks. Notably, hydration benefits were sustained even after a three-day regression period without use.
  • Tolerability and aesthetics: Daily use in clinically sensitive skin resulted in visible and tactile improvements in skin appearance and feel, without a significant increase in irritation. Patients also reported improvements in QoL.

Conclusion

The natural moisturizing factor and lipids-based cream moisturizer significantly enhanced skin barrier strength, hydration, and tolerability, while offering favorable cosmetic acceptability. These findings support its role as a preferred adjunctive topical therapy to support skin barrier health, particularly in patients with atopic dermatitis, rosacea, and cosmetic intolerance syndrome.
