Can metformin be used in diabetic kidney disease?

Metformin is the first line of treatment in all type 2 diabetes patients. It has pleotropic effect also. He will talk how many doctors stop metformin when serum creatinine reaches 1.5 level. He will further explain that serum creatinine is not a criteria to stop metformin in these patients.
