Healthcare providers are increasingly recognizing the urgent need for structured and supportive transition processes for adolescents and young adults with chronic conditions such as diabetes and cystic fibrosis. Yet, a critical gap persists in the care of youth with lipid disorders—individuals who face an elevated risk of premature cardiovascular disease.
Atherosclerosis, driven by plaque buildup in the arteries, begins early in life. Despite this, standardized transition protocols for adolescents and young adults with dyslipidemia remain absent. Further complicating care are conflicting recommendations between pediatric and adult lipid management, even as advances in pharmacotherapy continue to expand treatment options.
The absence of clear, evidence-based transition guidelines leaves young adults particularly vulnerable to disease progression and premature cardiovascular events. Experts emphasize the pressing need to develop comprehensive strategies that ensure continuity of care and effective long-term management for this high-risk group.
