Expert-Endorsed Methods for Fighting Hot Flashes

Hot flashes, a common symptom experienced by individuals transitioning to menopause, can be addressed through various treatments, according to experts. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) remains the preferred option for managing menopausal symptoms, but alternative evidence-based approaches can be beneficial for those who cannot undergo HRT.

The recently updated guidelines from the North American Menopause Society suggest non-hormonal options such as the FDA-approved medication fezolinetant, which targets the brain's neural activity responsible for hot flashes. Other recommended treatments include cognitive behavioral therapy, clinical hypnosis, antidepressants, weight loss, gabapentin, oxybutynin, and low-dose antidepressant SSRIs. However, certain therapies like cannabinoids, over-the-counter supplements, acupuncture, chiropractic manipulations, and specific medications were found to have insufficient scientific evidence or associated side effects. Although lacking extensive research, lifestyle improvements may still have individual benefits, such as avoiding triggers, maintaining a healthy diet, exercising, reducing stress, and practicing mindfulness techniques.
