Ethanol Sclerotherapy OR Laparoscopic Excision for Treating Ovarian Endometrioma?

A recent study that contrasted sclerotherapy and laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy regarding the recurrence rates of ovarian endometrioma, dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, and related complications in individuals aged 25 to 38 found-

  • Both sclerotherapy and laparoscopic techniques are effective in reducing endometrioma-related dysmenorrhea and dyspareunia over a 12-month period.
  • No marked difference in the occurrence of complications and recurrence rate between these two therapies, with both being equally beneficial.
  • A higher rate of AMH declines after laparoscopy than after sclerotherapy; however, no significant change in serum level of AMH exists after six months of laparoscopy.

Hence, it is reasonable to conclude that sclerotherapy can be a better alternative to laparoscopic endometrioma cyst removal with added benefits like reduced cost, shorter hospital stay, and faster return to activities.
