Virtual reality technology can aid in relieving anxiety during hysteroscopy

A new study evaluated the effectiveness of virtual reality (VR) technology in attenuating pain and anxiety during hysteroscopy.

This prospective, randomized controlled trial was conducted at a London University Teaching Hospital. The study entailed an unblinded trial including women aged 18-70 years undergoing hysteroscopy – comparing standard care with the addition of a VR headset playing an immersive scenario.

Results from 83 participants showed that the VR group exhibited significantly less anxiety (mean NRS 3.29 vs. 4.73, mean difference 1.50). However, there was no significant difference in average pain or maximum pain scores.

From the findings, it was inferred that VR technology can reduce patient-reported anxiety, but not pain, during outpatient hysteroscopy. Ongoing advancements in technology may further enhance its potential in improving patient experience.
