Higher Sedentary Time in Preschool Linked to Better Conceptual Skills in Boys

Low physical activity and high sedentary behavior during preschool are a growing concern, as they may affect children’s future cognitive development. A recent study investigated whether objectively measured moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary behavior are related to first-grade cognitive performance in both boys and girls in preschool.

The study included 50 boys and 41 girls from kindergartens, and MVPA and sedentary time were measured using accelerometers, and cognitive skills were assessed using a modified Boehm-3 test.

Results showed that preschool MVPA was not related to perceptual, conceptual, or verbal skills in first grade among either boys or girls. However, in boys, more sedentary time in preschool was linked to higher conceptual skills in school, while no association was seen in girls.

The study concludes that MVPA in preschool does not appear to influence cognitive skills in first grade for either sex. However, higher sedentary time in preschool is linked to improved conceptual skills in boys.
