Role of Goghrta (Cow's Ghee) and Medicated Ghee in Metabolism and Managing Metabolic Disorders

Metabolism is a complex and dynamic process involving all the chemical reactions in the body necessary to sustain life. It is regulated by various hormones and enzymes, and encompasses the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins—where nutrients are converted into energy and other essential biomolecules.

In Ayurveda, the overall metabolic function of the body is fundamentally governed by Agni, the digestive fire. Disturbances in dietary habits and lifestyle lead to the derangement of Agni, which in turn contributes to various metabolic disorders. Maintaining a balanced Agni, harmonizing the Doshas, and nourishing the Dhatus through an appropriate diet are key strategies in optimizing metabolism and sustaining health.

Goghrta (cow’s ghee) holds a place of great importance in Ayurvedic nutrition and has been an integral component of Indian cuisine for centuries. It is considered the best among all fats, due to its unique properties that support digestive and metabolic health. Ghrta influences metabolism at multiple levels by supporting the functions of Agni, Doshas, and Dhatus. When digestion is optimal, Poshaka Dhatu (nourishing tissue) is formed from the Ahara Rasa (nutrient essence), which in turn enhances Bala (strength), Varna (complexion), Ojas (vitality), and overall well-being.

The Rasayana (rejuvenative) effect of Ghrta helps maintain the quality of the Dhatus and thereby promotes longevity and metabolic efficiency. Therefore, the regular use of Goghrta in small, appropriate quantities is encouraged. However, excessive intake may overwhelm digestion and lead to Ama (toxic waste) formation.

The properties of Samskarasya Anuvarthana (retention of properties during processing) and Yogavahi (catalytic carrier) make Medicated Ghrta especially valuable in the management of specific diseases. Medicated Ghrta can deliver the therapeutic effects of herbs deeply into the tissues, enhancing their efficacy and targeting specific imbalances.

This review aims to highlight the potential health benefits of Goghrta in enhancing metabolism and the pivotal role of Medicated Ghrta in managing metabolic disorders. Ayurveda emphasizes that the body is the product of nutrition and that many diseases stem from impaired nutrition. The consumption of Ghrta in moderate amounts serves both as Hita Ahara (wholesome food) and as Aushadha (medicine), supporting bodily functions and aiding in the prevention and management of diseases.
