Ghee, or clarified butter, has long been treasured in Indian tradition for its culinary and therapeutic applications. Revered in Ayurveda for its unique healing properties, ghee is now regaining global recognition as a functional food, thanks to emerging research on its nutritional composition and health benefits.
Prepared from cow or buffalo milk, ghee is rich in essential fatty acids like linolenic and arachidonic acids, as well as fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. It also contains conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and butyric acid—compounds known for their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancer properties. Ghee's medium-chain fatty acids are easily digested, providing an instant source of energy and making it a preferred fat over other oils.
From an Ayurvedic perspective, cow ghee is considered sattvic, meaning it promotes clarity, calmness, and wellness. It balances the Vata and Pitta doshas, nourishes body tissues, enhances immunity, and supports digestion. Ghee is also used as a carrier in many Ayurvedic formulations (ghritas), helping deliver medicinal herbs deep into tissues.
Ghee offers a wide array of practical health benefits. It improves skin and eye health, supports wound healing, strengthens the nervous system, and enhances memory and cognitive function. Topical formulations such as Jathikalpa Ghrita and Panchagavya Ghrita have shown wound-healing and anti-inflammatory effects. Its antioxidant content supports cardiovascular and liver health, while CLA helps regulate blood sugar and reduces the risk of obesity and diabetes.
Despite being high in saturated fats, ghee has been found safe for consumption in moderation. Studies have shown no significant rise in cholesterol levels with its dietary use, particularly when compared to hydrogenated oils. In sum, ghee remains a time-tested component of holistic health, blending nutritional richness with therapeutic versatility. Its multifaceted benefits—rooted in both tradition and science—highlight its potential as a powerful ally in preventive and integrative health practices.
