Ghee, a clarified butter deeply rooted in Indian culture and Ayurvedic tradition, has long been valued for its therapeutic properties. Recent scientific research is revisiting these ancient claims, revealing bioactive compounds in dairy fats that may contribute to health and disease prevention.
A recent review examined the health benefits of ghee from both Ayurvedic texts and modern scientific studies. The Ayurvedic review analyzed 11 classical sources spanning over 3,000 years, identifying more than 4,000 references to milk derivatives, including 774 specific mentions of ghee. Reported benefits were grouped into 15 major categories, with emphasis on cognitive function, gastrointestinal health, and nourishment.
The modern literature review highlighted ghee’s therapeutic roles in wound healing, skin protection, and cardiovascular health. These findings align with some Ayurvedic claims, though modern studies mainly focus on topical and metabolic outcomes rather than systemic effects.
Together, these perspectives suggest that ghee has diverse therapeutic potential. Combining traditional Ayurvedic knowledge with recent scientific validation could help develop good strategies for managing chronic and age-related diseases.
