Bridging Perception and Practice: Behavioral Insights on Obesity Pharmacotherapy in Greece

Greek adults with obesity recognize the disease but hold mixed and modifiable views on weight-loss medications, influenced by information and insurance coverage.

Obesity, a chronic disease with significant health and economic consequences, continues to carry a strong social stigma—even among those affected. A study published in Hormones explored how treatment-naïve adults with obesity in Greece perceive pharmacologic interventions for weight management.

The cross-sectional study included 95 adults with a body mass index of 30 kg/m² or higher, recruited from obesity clinics across the country. Participants completed questionnaires on their weight history, beliefs about obesity, and attitudes toward anti-obesity medications.

Results revealed a striking paradox: while nearly 87% recognized obesity as a disease, almost 95% still considered it a personal failing. Only 22% held a clearly positive view of pharmacotherapy, yet over 60% expressed a desire to discuss such options with their physicians. Uncertainty over safety and efficacy was common, with around two-thirds unsure about potential risks or benefits.

Willingness to consider medication increased significantly with prior information and insurance coverage. Participants with irregular work schedules were also more likely to view medications as safe and effective.

The study underscores that attitudes toward pharmacologic treatment are not fixed and can be shaped by education and structural support. Addressing informational gaps and healthcare access could help more adults with obesity make informed, evidence-based decisions about their care.
