ABOUT THIS SESSION

The heart is more than just a vital organ—it is the rhythm of life, deeply connected to our health and well-being. From its intricate physiology to the conditions that challenge its function, understanding the heart is central to modern medicine. In this Monday Happy Hormone session, Dr. Sanjay Kalra will share his insights, weaving science with clinical wisdom to bring clarity on this fascinating subject.

Q&A

The central theme of the talk is understanding the heart as an endocrine organ and exploring the hormones produced by the heart and their role in cardiovascular health.

The heart is considered an endocrine organ because it produces and releases hormones that act on distant organs to regulate blood pressure, blood volume, and overall cardiovascular function.

The four main hormones produced by the heart are Atrial Natriuretic Peptide (ANP), B-type Natriuretic Peptide (BNP), Growth Differentiation Factor-15 (GDF-15), and Myostatin.

ANP and BNP help reduce blood volume and blood pressure by promoting sodium and water excretion through the kidneys and causing vasodilation of blood vessels.

ANP is mainly released from the atria, while BNP is primarily released from the ventricles of the heart.

BNP levels rise in heart failure due to increased pressure and stretching of the heart chambers, although the hormone becomes less effective due to hormonal resistance.

NT-proBNP is used to screen, diagnose, and monitor heart failure and to assess the risk of cardiovascular disease even in asymptomatic individuals.

GDF-15 acts as a protective mechanism by limiting body growth when the heart is unable to meet the increased metabolic demands, especially seen in chronic heart disease.

Myostatin inhibits muscle growth and increases in adults with heart disease, leading to reduced muscle mass as an adaptive response to cardiac stress.

Heart failure treatment targets hormonal pathways using drugs such as neprilysin inhibitors, ACE inhibitors, ARBs, beta blockers, SGLT2 inhibitors, and GLP-1 receptor agonists to improve cardiac outcomes.
