Q&A

Nipah virus infection is a zoonotic disease that spreads from animals to humans. Fruit bats are the natural reservoir of the virus. Humans may get infected by consuming contaminated food or through contact with infected individuals.

The first outbreak in India was reported in 2001 in Siliguri, West Bengal. A major outbreak occurred in Kerala in 2018, and a few isolated cases were reported afterward.

These outbreaks are linked to fruit bat migration, close interaction between humans and bats, consumption of contaminated fruits, and overlapping environmental habitats.

Early signs include fever, headache, body pain, cough, vomiting, and diarrhea. In severe cases, the infection can affect the brain and lungs.

Nipah has a high mortality rate of around 70-80%. Although it spreads less easily than COVID-19, it can be more fatal.

Caregivers, healthcare workers, close contacts of infected individuals, and people exposed to bats or contaminated food are at higher risk.

Fruits are safe to eat if they are properly washed and peeled. Avoid consuming fruits that are damaged or have fallen on the ground.

The patient should be isolated. Caregivers should use masks and gloves, wash hands frequently, and avoid contact with bodily fluids.

Diagnosis is done using RT-PCR testing in designated laboratories, based on a doctors recommendation.

There is no specific treatment available. Care is mainly supportive, including oxygen therapy, ventilator support, and ICU management.
