Can Fasting Aid in Preventing Tooth Decay?

Saliva plays a crucial role in maintaining oral health by washing away food particles and neutralizing acids. During fasting, salivary secretion increases to compensate for the food and fluid demands. The antibacterial effect of salivary fluids lowers the risk of cavities, gum disease, and bad breath.

Fasting, specifically intermittent fasting or a low-calorie imposes positive effects on gum and teeth health. Additionally, less frequent food consumption reduces bacterial activity, preventing plaque buildup.

Intermittent fasting also reduces inflammatory responses in the body, potentially preventing gum disease. Fasting can improve immunity, aiding in the prevention of oral infections and tooth decay. It triggers autophagy, the natural cellular repair process, which can heal gum tissue and tooth enamel. Fasting may also promote the development of new neurons and blood vessels, enhancing overall dental health.

Using Miswak – a natural teeth cleaning twig, during fasting is encouraged as it can reduce gum inflammation, clear plaque, and improve dental health. Fasting can balance salivary pH, preventing cavities caused by acidic saliva.

Of note, fasting alone is not sufficient for maintaining good oral health. Regular brushing, flossing, dental check-ups, and seeking dental treatment, when needed, are essential for oral health maintenance.
