Alarming Situation: NHRC Takes Action as Baddi, Himachal Pradesh Emerges as Hub of Counterfeit Drugs

The Baddi Industrial area in Solan, Himachal Pradesh, has raised concerns as it reportedly becomes a breeding ground for the production and sale of spurious drugs masquerading as food supplements and nutraceuticals. According to a recent media report, fake vitamins, syrups, and medications are being manufactured and distributed by numerous companies operating in the area. The gravity of the situation has prompted the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to take immediate action by issuing notices to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and the Ministry of Health.

The NHRC has taken suo motu cognizance of the distressing information regarding the prevalence of counterfeit drugs in the Baddi Industrial area. It has recognized the urgent need to address this issue to safeguard public health and ensure the integrity of the pharmaceutical industry. The area, which houses over 100 nutraceutical companies authorized to produce food products under the Food Safety & Standards Act of 2006, now faces scrutiny due to these alarming developments.
