ABOUT THIS SESSION

Join us for another insightful session of Happy Hormone, where we delve into the fascinating world of endocrine health. This session focuses on The Parathyroids—the small but powerful glands that play a critical role in calcium regulation and bone metabolism. In this webinar, Dr. Sanjay Kalra will explore and simplify complex hormonal pathways with the aim of bringing clarity and clinical relevance to a frequently overlooked yet vital component of endocrine care.

Q&A

There are four parathyroid glands in the human body-two upper and two lower-located on the posterior surface of the thyroid gland.

The parathyroid glands secrete parathyroid hormone (PTH), whose main function is to maintain calcium balance in the body.

PTH acts mainly on the bones, intestines, and kidneys.

Hypoparathyroidism may occur due to autoimmunity, surgical removal of glands, or rarely, due to cancer or radiation exposure.

Symptoms include muscle cramps, tingling sensations, stiffness, weakness, and in severe cases, seizures.

Primary hyperparathyroidism occurs due to gland overactivity (e.g., tumor). Secondary results from vitamin D deficiency or chronic kidney disease. Tertiary occurs when prolonged secondary hyperparathyroidism becomes autonomous.

PTH is temperature-sensitive, so samples must be collected fasting, kept cold (in ice), and transported quickly to ensure accurate results.

PTH increases blood calcium levels by stimulating calcium release from bones, enhancing absorption in the intestines (via vitamin D), and reducing calcium excretion by the kidneys.

Teriparatide is a synthetic form of PTH used in small doses to stimulate new bone formation in patients with severe osteoporosis.

The word is Pseudopseudohypoparathyroidism, one of the longest terms in medical endocrinology.
