The Role of Traditional Games in Early Childhood Education

Learning is a continuous journey that persists lifelong. Learning takes root in early childhood and is the basis for educational advancement. In contemporary times, a growing proportion of young children dedicate more time to electronic games than traditional ones. This shift concerns parents and educators, as they firmly believe that conventional childhood games foster more beneficial skills than modern electronic or video games. Traditional games encourage a wide spectrum of early childhood development, including – physical, social-emotional, moral, cognitive, and linguistic dimensions.

A new study aimed to emphasize the significance of traditional Kashmiri games in ensuring a well-rounded development of children's personalities. This study utilized data from various sources, for instance – books, personal accounts, academic articles, newspapers, online resources, and government records, primarily of a qualitative nature. The findings demonstrated that traditional games positively influence children's motor skills, language development, cognitive abilities, social interactions, and emotional growth.

Teaching cultural values and identity to children involves using traditional children's games during their early years in places like Jammu and Kashmir. Educators should incorporate these games into the learning process, promoting a free learning model. Play is essential for optimal child development, and traditional games offer several benefits:

  • Children playing traditional games can establish healthy habits, combating childhood obesity and emotional instability.
  • Play acts as a natural stress reliever and helps manage anxiety and fears.
  • Playing allows children to explore new ideas, connect experiences, and develop a sense of cause and effect.
  • Children build self-control through play, which is crucial for future success. Play aids in regulating emotions, delaying gratification, and negotiating skills.
  • Play enhances mental flexibility and imagination, helping children understand the world.
  • Play promotes mindfulness and experimentation as children become fully engaged in the present moment.

Policymakers and educators should recognize the importance of traditional play activities in early childhood development. A play-based curriculum, rooted in traditional activities, must be advocated. Future research should explore how ancient cultural play activities positively impact various aspects of early childhood development, including physical, social, cultural, and mental dimensions.
