Anemia in Pregnant Women: A Call to Action

Anemia during pregnancy is a significant health concern globally, which risks not only to maternal health but also to the infant. Despite considerable efforts to address this issue, recent studies highlight its alarming prevalence, emphasizing the urgent need for comprehensive interventions and more awareness.

A recent study conducted in India on 199 pregnant females with a mean age of 29.6 years, documents that 38.2% of the women had anemia; among which 42.11% had mild anemia, 56.58% had moderate anemia, and 1.3% suffered from severe anemia. It is important to note that the majority of pregnant females diagnosed with anemia (86.8%) were housemakers. Hence, there is an urgent need for targeted interventions aimed at this vulnerable populatio.

These constant inferences about anemia in pregnancy, documented from different sources, warrant healthcare systems and policymakers to prioritize the development and implementation of comprehensive strategies to fight anemia in pregnancy.
