Q&A

Vocabulary Therapeutics is a communication-based approach where healthcare professionals use positive, person-first language to support patients with obesity. Instead of labeling someone as an "obese patient," we say "a person living with obesity," focusing on respect, empathy, and motivation.

Behavioural Therapy focuses on changing actions, while Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) focuses on thoughts and beliefs. Vocabulary Therapeutics concentrates first on the words, phrases, and tone used by the patient and healthcare professional to improve health outcomes.

A patient's feelings, level of trust, and willingness to adhere to treatment are all impacted by language. While judgmental or negative language can exacerbate resistance and anguish, positive, action-oriented language fosters cooperation and hope.

Along with medication, injections, and surgery, there are also Touch Therapies (such as massage, acupuncture, and physiotherapy), Talk Therapies (such as counseling and psychological support), and Language-based Therapies (such as Vocabulary Therapeutics).

Using "Vocabulary Diagnostics," doctors listen to a patient's choice of words, tone, and expressions, noting if they show acceptance, denial, fear, or misinformation. This aids in addressing emotional barriers and customizing communication.

Three common issues are: Distortion: Misinterpreting the facts (e.g. Kidney biopsy will destroy my kidney) Generalisation: Assuming that other people's experiences will happen to them Deletion: Omitting important details about the treatment/procedure, leading to an incomplete understanding.

By challenging myths respectfully, providing correct information, and showing empathy. For instance, a step-by-step explanation of the procedure's safety and necessity can help to reduce anxiety and fear.

Empathy fosters trust by giving patients a sense of support and understanding. Patients are more likely to consent to helpful therapies when clinicians sincerely address their concerns and put themselves in their patients' position.

Yes. Patients with Chronic kidney disease often have fears and misconceptions about treatments like dialysis or biopsy. Positive, transparent, clear, empathetic, and respectful communication helps them accept and adhere to treatment plans.

The intention is to provide a collaborative, well-informed decision-making environment in which the patient is aware of their illness, has faith in their physician, and actively engages in their healing process.
