Sunlight through a window can induce Vitamin D synthesis

It is known that exposure to sunlight induces vitamin D synthesis. Recently, Luke Coutinho – a Holistic Nutritionist who specializes in Integrative and Lifestyle Medicine that sunlight through the window glass can also aid in vitamin D synthesis by the skin.

Skin, when exposed to the sun’s ultraviolet rays, synthesizes vitamin D – also known as the "sunshine vitamin". This is the biologically inactive form of the vitamin, which is then converted into its active forms by the liver and kidneys.

Midday is the ideal time to get sunlight for optimal vitamin D synthesis. Shorter time-span exposures at noon may be adequate to gain vitamin D.
