A new clinical trial showed that vitamin D supplementation help prevent cardiovascular events among older adults.
This study involved about 21,000 adults over the age of 60, is one of the largest trials of its kind to date. Previous randomized controlled trials did not provide evidence of vitamin D playing a role in preventing heart attacks. However, this new trial showed that vitamin D supplementation reduced the risk of major cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks, in the elderly. While more trials are needed, these findings challenge the previous belief that vitamin D supplements do not lower the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Cardiovascular diseases, including conditions like coronary heart disease, contribute to a significant number of deaths worldwide. Vitamin D is essential for various bodily functions, including calcium absorption, inflammation reduction, and immune function. Observational studies have previously linked higher vitamin D levels in the blood to a lower incidence of cardiovascular disease.
It is important to note that maintaining adequate vitamin D levels can be achieved through outdoor exercise and a nutrient-rich diet. Vitamin D supplementation is an option for individuals with vitamin D deficiency. Once sufficient levels are reached, further increases in vitamin D intake may not further reduce the risk of heart disease.
