Human fungal infections are on the rise. Recently, the first case of human infection by plant fungus was reported in Kolkata, India.
This case, published in Medical Mycology Case Reports, manifested as cough, difficulty swallowing, anorexia, fatigue, and hoarseness of voice. The patient presented with a paratracheal abscess in the neck and required two months of antifungal therapy. No recurrence was reported during the 2-year follow-up period.
Physicians reported that this unprecedented situation could be due to climate change and global warming, as only a few hundred fungi are pathogenic to humans.
