HIV Spread Likely in Spas – Vampire Facial
The vampire facial – a cosmetic procedure offered by beauty salons and spas, involves injecting autologous plasma into the skin – using a microneedle to render skin rejuvenation benefits. However, this procedure can prove life-threatening owing to infection transmission risks, such as – HIV. One such case was reported in 2018 in New Mexico––a spa treatment session led to HIV-positive statuses in two clients. Recently, one more case of HIV infection transmitted in a spa has been reported.
Invasive procedures, such as Vampire facials, must be conducted by certified practitioners to perform cosmetic treatments. This will ensure appropriate instrument sterilization and apt preventive measures to prevent bloodborne disease transmission.
A few studies have supported platelet-rich plasma (PRP) procedures for skin rejuvenation.
