Cryolipolysis - For Dermatological Cosmetic Surgery

CoolSculpting or cryolipolysis involves freezing fat cells at a body site with the help of a medical device, which leads to fat-cell death and eventual intrinsic absorption.

CoolSculpting gained popularity over a decade ago and has been widely used in esthetic dermatological surgeries – to remove excess belly and facial fat tissue. It was approved by the US FDA in 2010 for use in cosmetic treatments. Reports from 2014 suggest that 1 in every 20,000 patient’s experiences adverse effects.

Despite the high success rates, the intervention is not devoid of side effects. Lodging of hardened adipose tissue and failure of resorption can cause disfigurement. This phenomenon, known as paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, may increase the volume of the fat tissue, contrary to the expected outcome after cryolipolysis. Surgical correction may be necessary to correct such deformation.
