Artificial Intelligence Outperforms Traditional Models in Predicting Breast Cancer Risk

According to a new study, artificial intelligence (AI) has demonstrated superior accuracy in predicting breast cancer risk compared to conventional methods. Researchers found that AI programs could aid in earlier diagnosis and improved preventive measures for breast cancer. Experts anticipate a growing role for AI in the field of healthcare.

The study utilized data from mammograms performed in 2016 and involved the analysis of 13,628 women, of which 4,584 were diagnosed with breast cancer within five years. The AI algorithms evaluated the mammograms and accurately predicted interval, future, and overall cancer risk. In predicting the highest 10% risk group, AI outperformed traditional models by identifying up to 28% of cancers, compared to 21% by the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium.

The findings highlight the potential of AI to enhance breast cancer risk assessment and guide personalized screening strategies.
