A 78-year-old Bangalore resident becomes the oldest Asian to undergo bilateral lung transplantation. He suffered from aspiration pneumonia and severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The complex surgery led by Dr. K.R. Balakrishnan, Dr. Suresh Rao K.G., and Dr. Apar Jindal was successfully completed in MGM Healthcare, a multi-specialty hospital in Chennai. The patient had been on ventilator support and ECMO (Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation) for over the past 50 days. Despite the associated risks, the patient was deemed suitable for a lung transplant as he had had otherwise good health.
The first step was to register on the state transplant registry. The patient underwent bilateral lung transplantation once a suitable brain-dead donor became available. The surgery was successful, and the patient recovered remarkably and likely will be discharged soon.
